Referred to by its inhabitants as simply LES, the historical lowest east side may be considered by many as one of this town's final remaining real neighborhoods. This tenement lined off the beaten track enclave bears an uncanny resemblance to a business model and philosophy closely tied to the turn of the century immigrants who arrived with a sense of determination and an unwavering adherence to the model of the entrepreneur. Now a new history is being written, by Artisan Popcorn poppers, Cuban seed cigars sales woman, Mescal purveyors, even the owner of what he calls a speakeasy, serving only pre prohibition cocktails in his period decorated lounge on the 2nd floor of his Clinton St. watering hole. I took an interest in speaking to this unique demographic of owner operated, risk taking business people.497,300
